Whether you’ve had a single tooth removed, a dental implant placed, or a more complex bone graft, these post-operative guidelines apply to nearly every type of oral surgery.
Dr. Currie explains how to keep swelling down, protect your surgical site, and make your recovery as easy as possible. The key is following each step closely. Think of every instruction as a “volume knob.” Turn them all down, and your recovery stays quiet, calm, and comfortable.
Key Points
Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind after your procedure.
For a more detailed explanation, please watch the full video above.
- Stitches: Dissolving sutures are normal and may come loose or dissolve within 1–2 weeks. Salt-water rinses help them soften and disappear faster.
- Bleeding control: Bite firmly on damp gauze for steady pressure until bleeding stops. Replace as needed, and remove once it’s down to a light “trickle.”
- PRF healing layer: If you notice a yellow film, don’t disturb it — it’s your body’s natural healing material, not infection.
- Salt-water rinses: Wait 24 hours before starting. Then rinse gently and often to reduce pain, swelling, and bacteria.
- Pain prevention: Stay ahead of discomfort — don’t wait for pain to start before taking medication.
- Ice & swelling: Apply ice for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Swelling typically peaks around day 3 or 4 and improves from there.
- Diet: Stick to soft, room-temperature foods like yogurt, smoothies (but don’t use a straw!), or mashed potatoes. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or seedy items.
- Brushing: Use a soft toothbrush or damp gauze to clean gently around the surgical area without irritating stitches.
- Activity: Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous workouts for about a week — increased blood pressure can restart bleeding or worsen swelling.
