So looking at the total cost of a smile – yep, you might get sticker shock.  But it’s the one investment that you make that you carry around with you 24 hours a day. 4 Easy Tricks to Get Your Kids CAVITY-FREE for Life (and #2 will reverse small cavities!)

Before National Children’s Dental Health Month comes to an end, I want to shout this advice from the rooftops.  Cavities are NOT a necessary evil…not in baby teeth and not in permanent teeth.  New science gives us the ability to reverse cavities, make enamel harder in genetically soft teeth, and prevent nearly ALL cavities for kids and adults alike.  I’m so passionate about this subject that I shake when I speak about it.  So you can imagine how I must get when… I was talking to a mom-friend of mine last week.  Her son just found out he had a cavity, and she was stressed out.  So she said to me, “all kids get cavities, right?  I mean, cavities in baby teeth is no big deal…that’s why we get a first set of teeth that falls out, right?” FALSE! FALSE! FAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLSE! As a parent, you hate hearing that the dentist found cavities in your kids teeth.  Still, it soothes you to think, “at least they’re baby teeth that will eventually fall out.”  But that doesn’t soothe the expense OR the fact that your kid is going to have to undergo an unpleasant procedure.  Funny…after that procedure, what do we do to soothe our kid?  Give him a lollipop, of course!  (Seriously, y’all…you wouldn’t do that, right?  At least not until I tell you below which lollipops help reverse cavities…) Take it from a mom who is a dentist.  It doesn’t have to be this way.  Even if your child inherited your “soft teeth”, here are 4 easy things you can do to minimize and even erase cavities from your...

The Most Affordable Dental Care is at Your Fingertips: a message especially aimed at my 20-40 year old readers

Every week I hear someone mention how dentistry is very expensive, and I don’t disagree, it certainly can be. Moreover, it can be one of the smallest investments in your healthcare budget if you’re doing the right things at home. I also hear the gamut of reasoning behind why a patient thinks their suffering from dental problems: “my parents had gum disease so I do too,” “when I was pregnant I lost all my calcium and my teeth fell apart,” “I have bad genetics,” “my grandparents were in dentures by the time they were 30 so I guess I will be too,” and “my parents never took me to the dentist so now I’m having to deal with all the problems.” What I rarely hear is, “I know why my mouth is unhealthy; I’ve neglected to take care of it.” Don’t get me wrong, every now and again I meet someone who’s brave enough to own up to their less-than- stellar home care habits, or what I like to call “low-giene.” And if you’re one of the folks that have said or thought one of the statements I previously mentioned, most of those CAN play a FACTOR (the pregnancy one has pretty much been resoundingly refuted though). The reason I emphasize that is because sure, genetics can absolutely play a role, but it’s usually one part of the puzzle and can only really be blamed as the actual cause in extreme cases. Most people don’t realize how much control they have over their own dental fate (or maybe they don’t want to take ownership), but even someone whose whole...
Candy Buy Back 2014

Candy Buy Back 2014

Halloween brings the excitement of costumes, trick-or-treating, haunted houses, and other scary things. And what about the pounds and pounds of candy our kids collect? Your Atlanta Dental Spa Team believes that can be one of the scariest things of all! On average, every American eats 24 pounds of candy per year. A lot of that candy gets consumed on and right after Halloween. That’s why, once again, we are buying the candy back from your kids! That’s right, we will pay a cash reward of $1 per pound* in an effort to keep pounds of candy out of kids mouths and bodies. We’re not just preventing cavities, either. With childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes on the rise, we’re leading the way as health and wellness advocates for all of our patients and their families. Once we buy back all that candy, we partner with Operation Gratitude, so the candy gets divided into small care packages that are sent to our troops serving overseas. The troops are so appreciative they often write us letters thanking us for remembering them. Many of these troops are serving in places where poverty is rampant and local children have very little. These troops enjoy sharing the candy with these grateful children. And the kids react as though it’s the biggest gift in the world. Imagine that! Each piece of your candy could brighten the day (the year!) of a less fortunate child somewhere out there in the world. Scary Tricks Hiding In Your Halloween Treats

Scary Tricks Hiding In Your Halloween Treats

Did you fill the big pillowcase to the rim with Halloween candy? (sometimes stopping home to dump one load so you could fill it again?) Could you canvas not just YOUR neighborhood, but several others? After you got home, if you were like me, then you and Mom went through your candy to make sure it was safe. We threw away anything that was opened or home made, and we double-checked apples because of that frightening legend about razor blades. I remember some families even taking their candy to the ER to x-ray it. Halloween has changed a bit since I was a kid. The thought of my kids running around unsupervised at night is horrific. Now there are scary ingredients, like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), hiding in our treats. Dr. Mark Hyman’s blog describes HFCS and explains the detrimental effects it has on our bodies and our total health. This blog resonates in 3 of my major frequencies: Dentist, Mom, and Wellness Advocate. Here’s why: Dentist: The “good bacteria” in your mouth use the HFCS for metabolism and then release lactic acid as a waste product. The lactic acid erodes your enamel, boring a hole that becomes a cavity. The acid also accumulates so that your whole mouth becomes acidic. The acid environment programs the “good bacteria” in your mouth to behave like bad bacteria. And, now your mouth is full of pathogenic bacteria who have the ability to rapidly cause cavities and gum disease. Studies suggest that HFCS is even more tooth-lethal than simple cane sugar. Mom: Recent studies suggest that HFCS is as addictive as...
What Makes our Eyes Pop

What Makes our Eyes Pop

You know when you’re sitting in the dental chair, making that awkward small talk with your hygienist or dental assistant? You know how you’re face is pretty close to that person’s face? Most dental hygienists and assistants attempt to keep their faces presentable, but ours take it to another level. If you’ve ever studied one of our hygienist’s face while in the chair, you may have noticed some particularly stellar lashes. Beauty product referral has seriously gone through the roof in the Atlanta Dental Spa offices, and it can be attributed to our well-groomed team. Here’s a roundup of our team’s choice mascaras:...
Wait, What is a Dental Spa?

Wait, What is a Dental Spa?

We know that the words “dentist” and “spa” don’t generally appear in the same sentence. We also know that almost no person likes visiting a dental office. We also know that beige walls, neon lighting, and incessant drill sounds do not a pleasant visit make. Hence the birth of our practice. We set out to change the way people percieve a dental visit. We set aside the fact that we work in an industry most people begrudgingly tolerate and decided it was time to change it. Atlanta Dental Spa provides cosmetic, general, and complete health dentistry services in a serene, relaxing environment. We employ cutting-edge research and technology in every procedure, service, and treatment we provide. We figure, if patients are getting the highest quality treatment available, they might as well be comfortable receiving it. Along with the nature of our unique spin on traditional dentistry comes the perpetual question, “Do you massage teeth there?” While hilarious, the answer is obviously… kind of. The only part of the smile with nerve endings are the roots of the teeth–let’s be honest here. We do, however, perform a treatment for periodontal disease that requires a massage-like technique of antibiotic ointment application to the gums. So if you have periodontal disease, get excited for a gum massage. Otherwise, we love the massage digs. We’ll never turn a blind eye to a good...
Prevent Extra Dental Visits

Prevent Extra Dental Visits

You get the reminder. You check your calendar. You begrudgingly rearrange your schedule and make an appointment. For weeks, the little dot on your calendar gets dangerously close to ruining your morning. We all hate making and keeping medical appointments. We hate the extra half hour of traffic, missed meetings, and skipped coffee runs just to have someone put their hands in our mouth. The team Atlanta Dental Spa understands. ADS was founded on providing an experience as inconsistent with a traditional dental visit as possible. We feel you. You have control over the amount of visits you are required to pay, however. The frequency of recommended appointments mirrors the quality of your hygiene (referred to by our team as “home care”). The more effort you put into your own dental hygiene, the less appointments you will have to make. Luckily, there is a habit–one you’ve probably already formed–that can improve your oral hygiene outside of brushing, rinsing, and flossing at home: chewing gum. We all know that sugary foods can cause cavities. Here’s how: sugar + bacteria = acid acid = demineralization demineralization = decay decay = cavities Chewing gum after eating promotes saliva production, which neutralizes acid produced by a sugary-bacteria-y concoction. However, if your gum is sweetened, (who chews UNsweetened gum..?) the sugar in the gum reverses the effects of this mini-bacteria battle in your mouth. Back to square one. Unless.. The gum you’re chewing is made with xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener made from fruits and vegetables that is proven to fight decay. Chewing xylitol gum can help prevent extra dental visits by improving your home care, thus reducing...

Silly Heart Attacks

HuffPost Healthy Living posted this article about heart disease in women that details a busy talent agent’s near-death experience–a heart attack–similar to the one Elizabeth Banks portrays in the above video. The article highlights the importance of paying attention to not only health, but signs that a cardiovascular event could be near. This video is not only funny, but it also hits close to home with the doctors at Atlanta Dental Spa. It is the mission of ADS to create awareness around the crucial missing link in achieving and maintaining complete health: the mouth.More than 80% of American adults have periodontal disease.   The mouth is a gateway to the body. Periodontal disease, one that systemically spreads deadly oral bacteria via pathogens to the brain and heart, is often overlooked by physicians as a cause of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and even preterm or stillbirth. While it is important to be aware of your risk for heart attack, it is vital to be aware of what may be causing increased risk. Atlanta Dental Spa has the resources and tools to assess risk for a cardiovascular event, is your mouth healthy?       Make an...
